Relax!!! This has nothing to do with promoting Eskom or a complaint about any of the Load Shedding we've experienced this past festive season. I was on the phone call with my mom not so long ago, and it reminded me of how far we've come to actually even have the kind of relationship we have now.
I'm probably the first person you've ever heard giving compliments or seeing beyond the beauty of Load Shedding. Friday the 13th, my first night home from Res Eskom defied one of the most beautiful poetic lines in the Bible "Let there be Light" - It was all of a sudden dark and because mom is always organized she had already prepared the candles and matches (We don't know load Shedding at res, I kid you not🤞If it was me I wasn't going to prepare anything because I didn't even know the schedule, I was going to be using my phone torch to go and find the candles).
But anyways, we were sitting in the dinning room just me, mom, my sister and two little nieces. Our phones were on but the reception was terrible, so we were forced to actually have a conversation. Just after everything went dark I decided to go through my unread texts, my friend had texted that she's asking for a few hundred bucks and I cringed mom asked "What's wrong?" and I explained, her reaction was "Doesn't she know when someone is asking you for money you have serve womb pains?" 😂
Bathong! In my head I'm thinking "Is she serious?" but I feel it was very important for her to mention that because I then had an opportunity to address my issues when it comes to managing my finances and people that are NOT IN MY BUDGET. See, people have this thing of having some sense of entitlement to people's money because they have the "Now that you're working, you always have money to spare" Mentality, when that's not actually the case.
Yes there might be some petty cash lying around but it's meant for MY emergencies, you're probably thinking that I'm selfish when it comes to money but it's not my duty to change what you think about me or my financial lifestyle. I've been watching alot of Nicolette Mashile videos of youtube, so if you ask me for money for "Not so important" things and I don't give you any blame it her 😒
She speaks a whole lot of financial sense, when people don't know your plans for your finances they have the assumption that you always have money on the go, so it's important that you're honest enough about your finances and it's plans so that people don't end up in their feelings.
So that load Shedding made alot of sense for me, mom and my sister because there was so much honesty on the table about our spending patterns and how best we can be able to save up while affording our lifestyle. We also spoke about our triggers, which is something we never have done, had a debriefing session of our psychological appointments and had a conversation about the joint session that we are to soon attend.
So believe me when I say It's important to constantly work on our friendships and relationships be it spouses or family, for ours it started with a sudden darkness and a single candle. Transparency has become our love language
